Sonic Blast (1996) is the fifth and final Sonic game released for the Sega Game Gear. It was notable for being the only Game Gear title to feature Knuckles as a playable character alongside Sonic, each with unique abilities. The game used pre-rendered 3D sprites to simulate depth, a technique popularized by Donkey Kong Country, but this often caused slowdowns on the 8-bit hardware.
The game features five zones, each with two acts, plus special stages. Players control Sonic and Knuckles, each with unique abilities—Sonic's speed and Knuckles' climbing and gliding—requiring different strategies to overcome obstacles and enemies. The controls are straightforward: use the D-pad to move, look up, or crouch, and press 1 to jump or 2 for Spin Dash/Attack.
While the story follows the classic Sonic formula of stopping Dr. Robotnik's schemes, the focus is on platforming and exploration. The pre-rendered graphics give the world a distinctive, almost cinematic feel for the era, though the technical limitations sometimes hindered the pace.
Sonic Blast was never ported to other systems, making it one of the rarest and most sought-after titles in the Sonic franchise. Its experimental approach and technical challenges have earned it a cult following among retro gaming enthusiasts, and it remains a notable entry in the series for its unique place on the Game Gear.
