War Gods (N64, 1997)

War Gods was Midway's 1997 attempt to bring a 3D Mortal Kombat-style experience to the Nintendo 64. Developed by Eurocom, the game used pre-rendered digitized sprites to mimic the look of its 2D predecessors, but the low-resolution models and poorly animated backgrounds resulted in a visually unappealing and technically flawed presentation. The frame rate was frequently unstable, further hindering the already sluggish gameplay.

The combat system was simplistic, sluggish, and unresponsive, with characters feeling heavy and difficult to control. Special moves were awkward to execute, and the much-touted 'God Mode'—which transformed fighters into more powerful, monstrous versions—did little to salvage the core experience. The game's violence and Fatalities felt like a hollow attempt to imitate Mortal Kombat's success without the polish or depth.

Set in a mythological universe, War Gods features 10 fighters, each based on a deity or warrior from different world cultures. The story follows these combatants as they compete to collect the fragments of the Mask of Life and achieve ultimate power. Despite the ambitious premise, the narrative was underdeveloped and failed to give the roster the depth it deserved.

War Gods was met with overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and players alike, cementing its legacy as one of the worst N64 games ever made. It stands as a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of rushed development and over-reliance on dated technology, and remains a notable entry in the history of early 3D fighting games for all the wrong reasons.
