Time Killers

Released in 1995 by Farsight Studios and published by Strata, Time Killers is an arcade fighting game that carved a notorious place in gaming history through its extreme violence and unique dismemberment mechanics. Set in an interdimensional tournament where warriors from different eras compete for the power of time travel, the game became infamous as one of the most graphic fighters of the mid-90s.

The game's defining feature is its limb dismemberment system: players wield swords, axes, and other weapons to chop off opponents' arms and legs. Losing a limb has real consequences — a missing arm disables certain attacks, while a severed leg severely limits mobility. Fights continue until a character is fully incapacitated or decapitated, leading to brutally prolonged battles. Controls use a large joystick for movement and attack direction combined with a single button, a scheme that many found clunky and contributed to the game's chaotic feel.

The roster features warriors drawn from various historical periods, each fighting to claim the ultimate prize of time travel. Digitized graphics were used for the characters, a common trend of the era popularized by Mortal Kombat. Despite the ambitious concept, the crude visual presentation and imbalanced gameplay drew heavy criticism from reviewers at the time.

Time Killers gained a dedicated cult following for its over-the-top violence and 'so bad it's good' charm.
