The Legend of Kage

Originally released in arcades by Taito in 1984, The Legend of Kage arrived on the NES in 1985 as one of the standout action titles of the system's early library. It quickly earned a devoted following for its bold design choices and relentless pace, distinguishing itself from the flood of generic ninja games that followed.

The game puts you in control of Kage, a skilled ninja armed with a sword and shuriken. What sets Kage apart is its extraordinary vertical jumping mechanic — you can leap to the treetops and rooftops, transforming the side-scrolling layout into a multi-layered battlefield. This verticality was rare for NES action games and gives every stage a unique rhythm and challenge.

The story follows Kage as he races across four beautifully themed seasonal worlds — spring, summer, autumn, and winter — each with distinct visuals and enemy layouts. His mission is straightforward but urgent: infiltrate enemy territory and rescue a kidnapped princess from the clutches of evil forces threatening the land.

Though its graphics were modest by today's standards, The Legend of Kage was praised even at launch for its fast-paced combat and innovative level design. Decades later, it remains a cult classic among NES collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts, celebrated as one of Taito's most creative and memorable contributions to the 8-bit era.
