Strider Returns: Journey from Darkness
📖 介紹
Explore 12 futuristic levels as Strider Hiryu II in this non-canonical Genesis sequel. Battle through diverse environments with the plasma cypher — if you can master its sluggish controls.
Released in 1992 for the Sega Genesis, Strider Returns: Journey from Darkness is a non-canonical sequel to the classic arcade title, developed by Tiertex Design Studios and published by U.S. Gold without any involvement from Capcom. It follows the Strider legacy but stands apart from the official series canon.
The game features 12 levels spanning diverse locales including a moving train, an undersea base, and an orbital space station. Players wield the plasma cypher weapon and can access new power-ups such as temporary invincibility and enhanced cypher attacks. A password save system and two difficulty settings provide some accessibility, though the game is widely criticized for sluggish controls and unfair difficulty spikes compared to the arcade original.
Strider Hiryu II takes up the mantle as the new protagonist, battling through futuristic environments in service of the Strider order. While the story does not connect to the original arcade narrative, the game expands the world with new enemy types and stage designs that echo the high-tech aesthetic of its predecessor.
Though not regarded as a faithful continuation of the arcade classic, Strider Returns remains a notable entry in early Genesis platformers and a curious footnote in the Strider franchise. It serves as an interesting case study in how third-party developers interpreted popular arcade IPs during the 16-bit era, and it retains a cult following among retro gaming enthusiasts.
