Rampage (NES, 1988)

Rampage first hit arcades in 1986 before arriving on the NES in 1988, developed by Midway and published by Activision. The port streamlined some arcade elements but preserved the chaotic fun that made the original a hit, becoming one of the most recognizable destruction games of the late 80s.

Each level tasks you with demolishing every building in a city before moving to the next. Use the D-Pad to move, A to jump over obstacles, and B to attack enemies and structures. Military forces, helicopters, and tanks stand in your way, but brute force and strategy will clear the path. Two players can join co-op using the Select button to switch characters mid-game.

You choose from three mutated giants: George the gorilla, Lizzie the lizard, or Ralph the wolf. Each has unique stats and attack styles, making character choice matter in co-op. The story follows three humans transformed by a botched vitamin experiment, now running rampant across 128 cities in a cross-country destruction spree.

Rampage became a cult classic for its simple yet addictive premise and pioneering co-op mode. It spawned sequels including Rampage 2 and the 1997 reboot, and its influence can be seen in later city-destroying games. For NES collectors and retro fans, Rampage remains a standout title that captures the raw energy of 80s arcade gaming.
