Probotector is the European NES version of Contra, featuring robotic heroes RD008 and RC011 in 8 stages of intense run-and-gun action with co-op multiplayer.
Released in 1990 for the NES, Probotector is the European rebranding of Konami's Contra, created to comply with Germany's strict regulations on human violence in video games. Instead of human soldiers, players control two cybernetic heroes battling through an alien invasion across 8 action-packed stages.
The gameplay mirrors Contra exactly, delivering fast-paced run-and-gun action with a friend in co-op mode. Choose from a variety of weapon upgrades, including the iconic Spread Gun and Laser, and enter the famous Konami Code for 30 extra lives. The game is renowned for its punishing difficulty and rewarding weapon system.
Players take on the roles of RD008 and RC011, robotic warriors designed to fight alien forces threatening Earth. The robotic theme allowed Konami to retain the intense combat and explosive action while sidestepping regional content restrictions, giving the game a unique identity separate from its human counterparts.
Probotector became a cult classic throughout Europe and its name carried over to European releases of Contra III and Contra: Hard Corps. Its influence can be seen in the robotic enemies that later appeared in the Contra series, cementing its place as a memorable chapter in gaming history.
