Denjin Makai

Denjin Makai is a 1994 arcade beat 'em up developed by WinkySoft and published by Banpresto. Set in the cyberpunk year 2079, it features a society governed by the Control Body supercomputer, where players join the Ghost Chaser task force to combat invisible criminals called Ghosts.

The game offers deep combat with six playable characters, each equipped with throws, dash attacks, and energy-based specials. A recharging energy bar governs special moves, adding strategy to battles. Its challenging AI and large enemy hordes demand mastery of crowd control and team-up combinations in co-op play.

Choose from diverse fighters: Makai the balanced cyborg, Iyo the agile simian, Belva the hulking robot, Kurokishi the swift swordswoman, Zeldia the beastly claw-user, and Tulks the grappling wrestler. The story immerses players in a gritty dystopia where technology enables both control and rebellion.

Denjin Makai was later ported to the Super Famicom as Ghost Chaser Densei, refining the experience. A pirated reverse-port became widespread, highlighting its cult appeal. Its fluid combat system served as the foundation for the 1995 sequel Guardians, ensuring its lasting impact on the genre.
