Contra: Legacy of War, released in 1996, is a pivotal 3D entry in the Contra series, introducing polygonal graphics and cooperative gameplay for the first time. It represents a controversial shift from the classic 2D run-and-gun formula to a fully 3D experience.

The gameplay features a free-aiming system allowing 360-degree shooting across multi-tiered 3D environments, including zero-gravity sections and vehicle combat. The innovative 'Weapon Energy' system lets players charge special attacks like homing lasers and plasma waves, replacing traditional power-ups.

Players can choose between four characters: cyborg mercenaries Ray and Tasha, or alien hybrids Bubba and PD-280, each with unique weapon loadouts. Battle alien invaders in dystopian cities and alien planets, facing challenging enemies and dynamic battlefields.

Despite criticism for clunky controls and framerate issues, the game is noted for its ambitious scope. It includes a 'Simulation Mode' with developer commentary, and its soundtrack blends industrial rock with synth beats. Later Japanese releases added analog stick support and adjusted difficulty.
